SF, CA to Hughson, Ca - Frappez la Rue, Jacques

And we are off like a dirty shirt. (I think that phrase come from the old movie Pretty in Pink - shows how old I am.) We are beginning our journey back to Iowa and today we leave San Francisco to head over to Hughson, CA. We’ve enjoyed all that San Francisco has to offer, the walks, the history, the stairs, the Redwoods, the Golden Gate, the museums and the fun times we’ve had there. However, we will not miss the weather, the fog, the dampness and the coolness.

As Mark Twain once said:

‘The coldest winter I’ve ever spent was the summer I spent in San Francisco.’ or something like that. I’m thinking he was spot on. It didn’t help that every time we compared our temperatures and climate with that in Iowa, we were the ones in the cold. Though we were happy for the Iowans we had left behind, we were feeling that maybe we should have returned earlier.

We were surprised how fast rust can start in a salty atmosphere. Gary had to cut a chain holding a ladder on to our RV because he could not get the padlock off. He worked over the day at various times, spraying silicon on it and eventually could get the key into the padlock but could never get it to unlock. Finally, he had to cut the chain to get the ladder off. We also noticed some rust on our levelers but he also sprayed some silicon on them and they worked fine. But the entire RV felt a bit slimy from all the ocean spray that the high winds drove over the cliff onto our RV. We will definitely return to this area but are thinking that we might camp on the eastern side of the bay since there are several things that we’d like to see over in that direction.

Meanwhile, we hitched up the Jeep and took off to the other side of the bay and across California to Hughson. A pleasant trip and nicely short. We arrived and spent some time chatting with Betty, her sister Judy and Sibyl along with Susan, Betty’s daughter and 2 of her grandchildren. We then went back to the RV, positioned it in the driveway and got it ready for a 3-day stay. (We remember that after 3 days fish and visitors have worn our their welcome.)

Here is my Aunt Betty, her mother Sybil, who turns 99 this month with Judy, Betty’s sister.

We camped in her driveway, right next to her 5th wheel which she and my Uncle Chuck and Betty’s mother, Sibyl used to live in when they snowbirded in Yuma in the 90’s and early 2000’s. What a great campground. Betty snaked an electric cord out her garage for us to use, she served us dinner on Thursday night, we got to use her lightening quick internet, and - she gave us a personal tour of the Hughson Historical Society Museum. What more could you ask of a campground? We were also only 3 blocks from town where we walked in the morning to get our coffee from the Bakery and Sweet Shop.

In the evening we walked through the downtown area, all of 3 blocks and around some of the rest of town.
