Altoona, IA - Changes

When we arrived in Altoona in mid-August, we had a few problems with the RV and had planned to get some of these things done while we were here. Several years ago we limped into Mesa, AZ with some major problems and eventually traded for a new (to us) RV. The problems we have right now are, well, I don’t want to call them ‘minor’ but they certainly aren’t show stoppers. We have continued on since California when we noticed them and haven’t missed a beat. We’ve followed the plan for our trip, saw everything we had planned to see and made all the stops we had intended. But we always knew that we would have to face these problems sooner or later. We just chose ‘later’ while we were traveling.

First we had a leak between the the shower doors and the shower itself. It doesn’t look as if Winnebago put any caulk between the door framework and the shower stall itself. Gary had caulked it once before but with all the rockin’ and rollin’ that an RV does as it travels innocently down America’s highways (need I mention that our American infrastructure is falling apart) has torn the caulking off. Thus, one of Gary’s projects is to take the bottom piece of framework off, run a bead of caulk along the shower and then replace this piece framework. It took him about 3 days between taking the shower door framework apart, running the bead, putting it all back together again and waiting for the caulk to dry. Meanwhile we used the campground showers.

Another project, the flooring, we had decided to put up with it or get done in Florida when we were there in the spring of 2015. It wasn’t pretty, it caught dirt in the cracks but, putting up with it and pretending that it wasn’t a problem was ever so much easier than actually tearing it all up and replacing it. However, when my hernia surgery was scheduled a week out and my having to stick around for another 2 weeks for the doctor’s review, we decided to go for it. We decided that we would rather put up with 3 weeks of chaos than several years of dissatisfaction.

We also had a broken motor in our front MCD day shade (the black mesh one which blocks out the sun). We got it up in the morning but, as we bumped on down the highways of America, we noticed that it kept going lower and lower. One time, it bounced so low that we had to stop to raise it so Gary could see to drive. Every bounce we took made the shade bump lower. By necessity Gary has learned how to work the motor to get it back into its ‘up’ position since he’s had to do this several times.

There were some other minor problems but these were the major ones. Are they all done? Well, partially, enough to get rolling on down the highway. enough that we don’t have to think about them all the time.

But it isn’t all projects and work. We spent time with Cathy and Tom. Here we are walking around the paths in the town where they live.

We also met them for breakfast at La Mie, a French bakery in town. Who wouldn’t find something to like here?

And that is just their cabinet. You should see all the goodies they have on a table in front. Like these.

I didn’t put many pictures of my surgery in the blog - that might be too much information. But Gary did take this happy smiling picture of me - before I went in. Note how I'm smiling, I must be on drugs already.

But, I can see this wonderful view out of the kitchen window when I work.
