WOW, I can’t believe that we are staying in our RV in the campground today. Well, most of the day - we will take our walk this afternoon and I’m thinking that a visit to the ice cream shoppe is in order. I don’t think that the next campground will have such good access to this treat. When we pulled in last Saturday, the parties were already going on. Our neighbors - all 5 RV’s of them were playing bean bag toss, cooking over an open fire, playing country western on their radio for the whole campground and having a great time. Here we are at a quieter time in the campground.
Of course, they took a break to critique our maneuvering through the campground. Thanks, guys. later on in the evening there was a DJ who picked up the country western theme and ran with it until 9:45 on the dot when all the music stopped and the campground got quiet.
Today, it is Friday and we’re expecting the campground to be full again. It’s got lots of sites available now but, when our neighbors asked if they could extend for a day - they were told no, that the campground would be full on Friday night. So, there should be lots of opportunities for us to critique the newbies coming in. Oh, boy, nothing like sitting in the RV, watching the new RV’s coming in and parking. Hey, Gar, pass me the binocs. Actually, these are all pull-thru’s and I’m not expecting much to critique.
In our last campground outside of DC, the prevailing city sounds were sirens and helicopters. Now, sirens I expect in a city - we lived in Des Moines, a pretty quiet Iowa kind of city and we heard sirens there too. But, in DC, we could hear them several times a day - every day. We also heard helicopters flying over a lot. Lots of security and several air force bases around the area but I hadn’t expected to hear helicopters just about every day.
Here in this campground outside of Gettysburg, we hear the quiet and the country sounds of neighs. This campground is also a stables area and people bring their horses here to trail ride through the National Park. (Of course, that does make it a bit hazardous for us hikers. We have to do the ‘do-do two step’ as we walk along the trail.)
Here are the 2nd and 3rd ‘horse RV’ checking into the campground. I couldn’t get my camera out fast enough to get the full chain of 3. But, you get the idea.
Of course, if we’re in the campground, that means that Gary is doing the laundry and I am working on bookkeeping and blogging. don’t think for a moment that we are sitting around. Much a we would like to, we’ve got things to do. We have a week in Philly coming up and then a week in a small town called Port Republic in New Jersey near the shore. Nothing to do there and we’re counting on that - we will have time to sit and do whatever we want for a week. No touring although we might spend a day on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. Gotta see it all before it goes bankrupt. Who ever would have thought that Atlantic City would go bust? I guess the growth of other gambling opportunities like more casinos and on-line gambling have taken their toll. But, it hasn’t gone bust yet and who knows - they might pull a rabbit out of the hat.
Everywhere we go, there are ghost tours and, boy are they popular. Of course, Gettysburg has ghost tours, too. Here’s one sign we saw that advertised for some: Note that you can get the ‘inside’ tour, the ‘intense’ tour and the ‘extreme’ tour.
You can calibrate your level of scare. Now, Gary and I were thinking that Iowa needed some tourist excitement: we’ve got the ‘Bridges of Madison County’ for the women, the motorcycle museum for the guys but we need something to attract the kids. So here’s our starting plot: ‘He killed her in the barn and now she walks the corn fields at night.’ Who-o-o-o. What do you think of that? Hmm, maybe not.
We’ve got a lively bunch in the campground tonight. We’ve got 28 square dancers called the Square Campers. They’ve already invited us over for their big ‘newbie’ do on Saturday night. We have a family group on the other side of us. They’re having a great time, giggling and laughing. Sounds like Gary’s aunts when they get together. They’ve got their family area all set up for the big banquet: tables with table cloths for eating, the serving tables, the tent over head. All ready for the food. Then they went out to eat.
We’ve walked through the town of Gettysburg several times and love the older homes with the stone facades.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get enough miles during the day and had to walk a bit in the RV to get up to my goal of 1200 on my Misfit. I can take 12 steps from one end to the other. Wonder how many round trips I'll have to make to get to my goal?
Our last activity of the day was getting the RV ready to roll on down the road tomorrow. How in the world can 2 people have so many dishes?
Might as well get an ‘early’ start. Actually, we have o trip of only 140 miles to get to our campground outside Philly - on the New Jersey side of the river.
