Blaine, WA - Adventures: From Defrosting to Break-In

Some days it’s the little adventures that make the day better than dull. Today was one of those days. Look at this list and you can see all the cool adventures we had today. They began with the ennui-producing defrosting adventure and ended with the anxiety-producing break-in adventure (not ours, though).

Defrosting Adventure - it began here. Our frost-free freezer got so frost filled that we couldn’t get out ice maker to work. It just kept clicking away. So, we began with moving everything on the left side to the right and into the refrigerator and then Gary began his magic - with my hair dryer. Yeah, yeah, I know you’re not supposed to use the hair dryer but he was careful and didn’t over use it. Meanwhile I had taken some frozen chicken out of the freezer to fry it up to refreeze it.

Chicken Frying Adventure - We have read on the Canadian Custome website that they do not want uncooked meat or chicken coming across the border. So, I got out the fry pan, sprayed it with Pam and fried our chicken and our pork chops away. Now we have no fresh meat but a lot of fried chicken and some pork chops for future meals.

Freezer Mystery Adventure - well, anytime I do a freezer clean-out, I find a mystery. This time it was something in a plastic container that looked a lot like lentil soup. But, no way better to tell than to thaw it. Yep, lentil soup. And was it ever delicious on a cool, overcast day like today.

Verizon Adventure - What to do about calling, texting and data in Canada. It seems the process changes every year. We called Verizon and found out that the current plan was to charge $2.00 per day for device used, and, if no device is used, no charge. Pretty cool. We can put our smart phone on that plan, hook our computers and my iPad up to the phone as a personal hotspot and it will cost us - max - $16 for the 8 days we are in Canada. That way we can use our regular calling, texting and data plan through Canada. But, do we expect to have much cell phone service up there? Nope, so it might not cost us much at all.

Amazon Adventure - I had ordered several things for my brother, Jack: a new exercycle, a mat for it to sit on, a new bike seat for his delicate buns and an iPad holder so he could read that while he biked. Oops, Amazon sent everything to him except the seat which they sent to Mesa Arizona where we stay in the fall. OK, I called, they goofed and will take care of it. Meanwhile I told Jack to buy his own seat in Fort Dodge where he can test it rather than buying it sight unseen online. He did, loves it and everything is cool.

Break-in Adventure - this was NOT our adventure but we got involved. We wanted to take our daily walk along the Blaine spit out to the marina, drove out there and parked. Next to us was a car with its passenger side smashed and then a policeman drove up and talked with the woman standing there. Hmmm. Doesn’t look good. The policeman departed, we expressed our dismay to the owner of the car and got the whole story. She lost her job and her home, is living with her mother and was walking out here to relieve her sciatica. Oh, my. While she was walking someone smashed her window, took her purse and left. Glass all over her front seat, the window frame and the parking lot. Who else has hiking gloves to pick up the glass, an ice scraper with bristles on the other end to sweep them up and a small plastic container in their Jeep (to carry hiking equipment) to hold the swept-up glass? WE DO. And, we set to work. Meanwhile her mother was there to call the credit card company to cancel them. Poor woman. She was at her wits end. But we were a bit of a calming influence and were getting the mess cleaned up. Whoo-eee. We finished, she thanked up and drove off. And we moved our car to another spot in the same parking lot.

Metric Adventure - we’re so close to Canada that we’re finding metric all over. The only TV station that we get is from Vancouver and now I know that I don’t need to put on my hoodie when the temperature is 19. In fact I’m getting used to the temperatures in the low 20’s. We arrived while it was 27 (shorts weather) and know that 19 is getting cooler. Distances are also in metric and, instead of walking our usual 4 miles, we can walk 4 kilometers. (For those who are counting, that’s really only about 2.4 miles. Ha, ha. But, hey, it’s 4, isnt’ it?) But, I’m not sure how to tell time in metric, yet.

We’re pretty weary after all those exciting adventures. Time to relax. In the evening I was doing some channel surfing and found - Murphy’s Romance. Whoo-eee. One of my favorites. Perfect. They just don’t make them like this any more.
