The sunrise this morning was glorious. Every shade of blue in the sky. Great way to start the day.
Our destination today is Gothenburg, NE, where there is a small city campground on a lake and an original pony express building, though it has been restored and converted from a 2-story building to a single story.
Uneventful trip through the farmland of Nebraska on state and local roads. Lots of small towns. We enjoyed the trip and enjoyed the pony express building with some displays of local lore. Hey, did you know that every Frito corn chip produced west of the Mississippi probably came through the Gothenburg Frito Lay plant and was made from corn grown within a 100 mile radius of Gothenburg? Well, neither did I, but it’s true. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with this bit of information but here it is.
Our campground was a small typical city campground. We thought we’d be alone in it but another RV was there when we checked in. Slowly but surely, the campground filled: one tenter on a motorcycle (in 90 degree heat), 1 pop-up trailer, 2 5th wheels, 1 teardrop trailer and I haven’t even counted the threesome in the small conversion van. Quiet evening and a good rest.
In the morning, we headed over to the local donut shop for our shot of sugar to start the day and it was closed. Saturday and it was closed. It’s usual hours on Saturday are 7:00 to 2:00 but not this Saturday. But we needed milk too so we went to the local grocery. Across the street was this mural commemorating the Pony Express.
