San Diego has a lot of Farmer’s Markets: each city and each neighborhood in the county has its own. We’ve been to the Hillcrest and the La Jolla markets both several times. Today, let’s try something new and so we’re on our way to Little Italy, close to the center of the city.
Morning is a bit chilly but, as we walked through the market, it got warmer and we were in shorts and a t-shirt by the end. Now, we’ve been going to the Des Moines Farmer’s Market for many years, and it is really good. Firstly it is big and takes in about 7 blocks. But it fills those blocks with lots of produce - why else have a farmer’s market? But it also has baked goods, lots of crafts, lots of music and lots of people watching. Any market this big has to be good. And, it is. But, then, the markets in the other cities and neighborhoods around Des Moines are not very large at all.
Here all markets are about the same with some a little larger and some a little smaller. The Little Italy market is supposed to be one of the larger and, compared to Hillcrest and La Jolla, it is. And, it has several things we have not seen in Des Moines. Several fish shops. When did we ever see fresh oysters in the Des Moines market?
And, then there are these little things:
Live sea urchins. Gary, we’re not in Des Moines, any more. We watched them being readied for eating and then asked this young woman about eating them. Delicious she said.
We DO have creperies in the Des Moines market but this guy was pretty good. His hands never stopped moving between his two grills he had and he always had a line of 5 or 6.
We liked this musician. He plays bluegrass and country and was pretty good and always had an appreciative crowd - as you can see in his fiddle case.
But, we had cruised the market and it was time to take our daily walk - down to the water’s edge. What could be better than walking along the water?
Even a quinceanera with the photographer arranging the picture.
Time to go home. Remember those restaurant left-overs? Guess what’s for dinner tonight?
