Dawson Creek, BC #1- End of the Alaska Highway

Then we visited the Alaska Highway House run by the Chamber of Commerce. Here are loads of exhibits, pictures, letters, quotes, artifacts and an exceptionally good PBS film about the building of the Alaska Highway. The film was in progress so that’s the first thing we did. PBS did its usual excellent job and we learned a lot. There were all kinds of exhibits, signs and pictures. All telling another piece of the story of the building of this amazing road.

First a description of the job itself.

And, then, the route.

Much of it was in the words of those who built it.

 

Here’s a picture (staged, I assume) of the two different crews working on the road, one from the North and one from the South. The story is that 2 guys on the dozers burst through the forest and unexpectedly met.

Excellent museum, especially with all the quotes.

Then off to the Northern Alberta Railways museum in the Visitor Center. This was the train station in the past and the left half of the building is the railway museum with the train masters office and quarters.

The other half had lots about the history of Dawson Creek.

 

Fun walking through Dawson Creek, the last stop of our trip along the Alaska Highway. Of course, we still have 1500 + miles to go to get back to Iowa.
