Gold Beach, OR - Another Tree-mendous Adventure

Thanks for the title, Shirley.

Remember that picture I had on the blog 3 days ago about the Titans, the one with the miniature Gary standing in front of the mammoth tree? Well, Gary kept insisting that I had photoshopped it (even though we do not have Photoshop on our computers), that no tree could be that size and that he hadn’t really seen how big that tree behind him really was because he was posing in front of it. I had a hard time believing it too so today, our first full day in Oregon, we hied back down to California to do the same hike again, to find that tree and stand in awe once again. We had checked the weather and knew that a cold front was coming in Monday afternoon and so Monday morning looked like the best time.

Up at 6:00, breakfast and we were on our way. We knew where we had parked, where we had hiked and we did the whole thing over again. Were the trees really that big? Did I really photoshop that picture? Did we find more of the Titans in the Grove of Titans? Yes, no, and a resounding yes.

We found the Screaming Titan again, but this time, Gary took the picture while I posed in front. Now he can’t say that he never saw the tree because he was posing in front of it, again. And, check it out, I look just as small in comparison to this huge redwood as Gary did. This tree is 30’ in diameter at the base but divided into two tall stately trees about 40’ up.

We found El Viego del Norte with its famous horned burl.

We also found some other trees in the Grove though I don’t know the names of these. But they are as stunning as the others. What a day.

And then we found Del Norte, one of the biggest Coast Redwoods in the world. This one took a bit more time since it was really in a whole different location but we were on a mission and wanted to see it. It may not have the biggest base, it may not be the tallest, but the trunk is awesome, it is one single trunk and it seems to go up forever. It just doesn’t quit.

Goal complete: we’ve found the Grove of the Titans, we’ve confirmed that I did not photoshop the picture by miniaturizing Gary and we had the great pleasure of seeing some of the biggest Coast Redwoods, in fact some of the biggest trees in the world. They are magnificent, they are awesome and thrilling to see.

We also toured the Stout Grove again to see if we could get some pictures of the redwoods contrasted with the lush green ferns surrounding them.

Here’s a burl in a redwood tree that I thought looked just like Popeye with his hat, his corncob pipe and his jutting jaw.

We thought hiking in the redwoods was awesome. We’ll be back.
