Vicksburg, MS - Oops

The day began with a bit of a snag but nothing that should slow us down - in fact, it will make us go faster. I had made a reservation for Natchez back in October and had spoken with a real person and made a deposit. In the meantime we ordered a new iPhone, the 6+, and it had been delivered to our mailing service. Now, I’ve just got to get it to us but need the address for mail. I called the campground three times on two different numbers and always got a voice mail saying that they were busy. Never got called back, never got a confirmation of our reservation, never got the address for mail. Not looking good. Next I e-mail them and got the reply: not deliverable. So, I called, cancelled and told them that I didn’t expect them to take the deposit since I was calling in advance and had not heard from them. But, who took my reservation in the first place? The gremlins?

So, on to New Orleans, where we were going next anyway. I just had to adjust 2 reservations so it was not a problem. Now, on with our day. We had planned to visit the Depot Museum and come back to the RV. We need a bit of down time for chores and relaxation. Yeah, right. Might ever happen. The Depot Museum had a lot of models that had been lovingly put together. Many were one of a kind and many were actually not from a kit but hand-designed and made. But the centerpiece of the whole museum was the scale-model diorama of the Vicksburg siege battlefield. Tiny little cannons, tiny little soldiers, tiny little trees but, oh, how it showed the battlefield.

We had the advantage of having walked lots of the battlefield up onto the battlements so this just helped us understand what happened. But seeing this first would be good to help understand walking the battleground.

Maybe you all know this trick with your iPhones and taking pictures. Instead of having to futz with the big black dot on the face of the camera, just use the ‘up’ volume control. You can thus hold it like a camera and not jar it when you press that dot on the face. So much easier. But, if this is so much easier, why in the world is that black dot on the face of the phone? And, why don’t the instructions tell you this?

Lunch was at the Main Street Market, up the hill. And, when I say ‘up’ the hill, I mean about 200’ up. It’s a high bluff. But the lunch was marvelous: ham and cheese quiche, salad and potato soup with 3 marvelous flaky little biscuits. With coffee - all for $10.00. I’ll have to admit that we shared but we both got as much as we wanted. Well, I always want more but have to put the fork down sometime.

Next we did as the locals do: we went over to the battlefield and walked the roads. We’ve seen dozens of locals doing this and we saw some more today. Afterwards, we headed on over to the Interstate 20 VC and looked out over the Mississippi and the two bridges that span its width: one a RR bridge and one for the highway.

But, but, but, where’e the walking path? Shucks. Wouldn’t it be neat to walk over the river? Well, maybe not in the wind chill that we had today but still - a neat walk it would be.

Back home and I’m thinking soup and corn bread would just hit the spot today.

Hey, Gary found some time to fix our TV. We lifted it off the brackets and onto the sofa where he could open the back and see if he could find anything out of place.

And, he did - one of the two flat red wire bundles at the top was totally unconnected. He connected it, turned the TV on and - voila! - it worked. We can now see all seven days of the weather and when the quarterback tosses a pass in a football game on one side of the screen, we can see it being caught on the other.
