Cape Hatteras, NC - Stack 'Em High

Even though it’s a day at home, we began with breakfast out, at the Stack ‘Em High restaurant in Kill Devil Hills. Did you guess that pancakes were their speciality? But, they also do omelets and other dishes. I ordered the veggie and cheese omelet while Gary ordered the chocolate and peanut butter chip short stake. Our plan was to share. Ummm, good.

The restaurant was painted in pastels and there were witty saying all over the restaurant, along the roof beams, around the windows, across the top of the front counter. The walls were a light off-white and the beams were painted in pastels with these sayings like these painted on them.

‘the sum of success is the number of small things done well.’

‘a closed mouth gathers no feet.’

‘if a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?’

Delicious breakfast, witty sayings, oldies but goodies playing in the background. Any time you can eat breakfast to the Youngbloods playing ‘Get Together’ you’ve got a good day goin’. Our waitress was from Poland. She’s got her degree in Biology and is studying over here to get her Master’s. We asked her how she like it and she struggled to find the kindest word but finally said ‘disappointing.’ She finds the educational system a bit easy. English is not her native language but she finds that she understands better than the Americans in her classes. Some of them didn’t understand what ‘synonym’ meant in one class.

Why do two people who don’t watch much TV have so much trouble with it? Our campground had cable and when we hooked it up, we got - nothing. It found all the stations but we couldn’t get any picture on any of them. Same thing on the bedroom TV. Gary worked and worked. He substituted wires to see if that was the problem. He plugged the wire right into the TV to see if our little black box might be the problem.

We were taking the out side TV out to see if we could hook the wires into it to see if it had the same problem when we asked the neighbor if he was having any problem.

‘Did you pay for the little box they have here? You have to pay for that and then call the cable company to turn it on.’

‘Oh.’ No we did not and were never told that we had to. The campground says they have cable, our electric post had a cable connection. You might have thought that we’d be told about the extra payment and the call to the cable company. Just thinkin’.

Oh, well it’s not our TV, it’s not the cable, it’s not the black box. At least, we’ve tested everything. And, of course, we’re so far out here that all we can get is PBS - which is just fine. It’s got great news and that’s all we need.

Every now and then, we learn why we don’t want to park the RV under a tree. This is one of those times. Looks like we’ll need to clean the top of that slide cover before we move on.

We have two friends who are traveling through Europe for a year in a small RV which they bought in Holland and the deal is - when they are done traveling, they can sell it back for half what they paid for it. They have joined a European camping club and have told us that there are camping places all over the continent. Some are regular camping spots but many are just like small parking lots with hook-ups. They plan to travel all over and even hit Morocco and some Eastern European countries. Interesting method of travel and I say ‘who knew?’ But obviously, this couple did. They travel a lot and are visiting in Belgium with a guy they met in Indonesia several years ago.

They met on line. We have met 3 55+ couples, over the last 4 months who have met online. Good for them.
