Our morning was very dull: I did bookkeeping and paid some bills while Gary did some laundry and some book work on the RV. We did a load of whites and, because we don’t want shirts to get wrinkled, we pull them out a bit damp and then hang them throughout the RV, on chair arms, the backs of seats, the backs of sofas, etc. Our house looks like it snowed with all the white around it. And, I must confess, we had washed some undies also so those were also strewn over the furniture.
We expected some friends to drop by about 4:00. At least, they had told us that they would get into town late in the day. Should I have believed them? I guess not. At 1:30, we got a phone call and we knew who it was. Our friends were at the front gate waiting to come in. From the front gate to our RV is 3 minutes. Were we scrambling? You bet. We scooped up the laundry, put away our bookkeeping, changed into something more suitable for company and then greeted them at the door huffing and puffing.
It’s Shirley and Jerry, two friends who also RV. Actually, I worked with Shirley when we both worked for Wells Fargo. We both quit in 2008, she in June and I left on October 2. We’ve all been snow birding since. Every now and then we actually are in the same place but usually not. 3 years ago we both met in Casa Grande, AZ. 2 years ago they were in Alpine, TX heading west and we were in Balmorrhea, TX, about 60 miles away, heading east. With the whole country ahead of both of us, it’s hard to find a place to meet. It is a huge country, you know. This year they are not RV’ing. Jerry has been fighting throat cancer and has been in chemo and radiation most of the fall.
His treatments have ended, his doctors have told him they got it all and they decided to hit the road. Sounds like they have ‘hitch itch’ without the hitch since they are driving their car and staying in motels and hotels. We are ecstatic that they have been able to meet us in Vegas.
After a short chat and making plans for Thursday, they took off for their hotel and we got back to work.
At 3:00 we took off for our daily walk. We had heard that there was a trail which followed the old railroad bed laid during the construction of the Hoover Dam to get supplies from Las Vegas to the dam site. The trail has 5 tunnels and skirts the mountains on the Lake Mead side. History, great views and a nice walk - what more could we want? We drove to what we thought was the trailhead, laced up our boots and took off. And walked, and walked and walked, never coming any closer to what we thought look like the railroad bed with tunnels. We could see it but never seemed to near it. Finally, we reached another trailhead - aha - here is the trailhead where we should have started. Shucks, we started one trailhead more up the trail. Oh, well, another time.
Here’s a young person who travels a lot faster down the trail than we do.
