Birch Bay, WA - Searching for Mt. Baker

Today dawned sunny, clear and not a drop of rain did we hear on our RV roof. It’s time for Mt. Baker and we were on the road by 8:30. We took Mt Baker Road which winds up through the mountains, past a swift running current,

small towns, through a closed ski lodge up to Artists Point. It’s still pretty snowy up here, even in mid-June.

Finally, we got to where the road ended. Well, it really didn’t end but there was a gate across it and no cars could pass. We parked, asked the crew working there if we could walk up the road, were told that we might meet the crew plowing the road and we took off. Note how high the snow drifts are here. Nice walk up the road but we soon came to this and knew we could get no further. Here we have a snow plow plowing snow into the path of the snow blower which is cascading it high above. The road should be open in a few days but not today.

No Mt. Baker. But look at the views we did have.

Here I am looking into a crevice in the snow drifts.

Finally we headed down the hill to where we found a trail along the river filled with glacier melt rushing headlong down the valley. Beautiful trail.

Then home. Did we see Mt. Baker? Nope. Did we have a marvelous day? You bet.
