Not only have we had lots of rain (and gotten lots done in the RV) but we’ve also had several high tides with high surf advisories. They had warning signs all over about the swells increasing to 6’ to 10’ with sets to 14’. That’s got to be something to see and we toddled on down to Ocean Beach where we thought we’d have the best view. Others had the same idea. We found the street lined with cars and these 4 who had fortuitously brought their chairs, their coffee and their coffee ring. All bundled up to watch the show.
And, what a nice show it was. Built in 1966, Ocean Beach Pier is the longest concrete structure of its kind on the West Coast, extending 1,971 feet with a T-shape platform at the end At 1,971 feet long, the Ocean Beach Pier is the longest pier on the West Coast and longest concrete pier in the world.
We walked down the cement pier to watch the waves crest and the surfers ride them out. But, the waves were cresting right under the lowest part of the pier and WHOOSH, came right over the pier - to the surprise of those standing there. Hmmm, the pier is all wet - what clue did they miss?
Oops, looks like the photographer found the waves cresting under her too.
Nah, it looks worse than it was. My camera didn’t even get wet.
But the surfers were out in force and putting on a show.
I particularly liked the rainbows that appeared when the wave crest was especially frothy.
Then, look on shore and watch the waves crash against the walls.
And, the ever present Marines are flying their Ospreys along the coast for practice.
‘What on earth would I do if four bears came into my camp? Why, I would die of course. Literally shit myself lifeless.’
